Utah Parks Oct. 27 – Nov. 3, 2016
Instead of buying more equipment I took a photograph workshop with Mark Buckler. Probably the best investment in my photography I’ve ever made! I did a quick review of my pictures and selected a few to share – of course, with a few comments.
Arches – Lesson 1. I told Mark I like this tree and the light. He said, “Move around to here” and snapped a picture to show me. A completely new vision for me. I’m usually straight on, straight lines, rectilinear arrangements. Now I’ve got a new view to experiment with …
Arches again, but the last day. I’m slowly learning a new viewpoint!
Bryce – Of course, we did some of the traditional shots like this sunrise.
Somewhere on a Utah Scenic Byway – A new assignment. Move the camera during exposure to add motion to a group of trees.
Somewhere on a back jeep road. Another assignment, highlight a tree and let the background go black.
I tend to prefer some detail in the background.
Or you can silhouette and object in front of a bright background. Again, I often like to include some detail in the silhouette.
We scrambled a lot! Here I left my feet in the shot for fun.
A different exposure without my feet.
And another exposure. We learned to view the sight from many angles, experiment with different views – and to work the view we liked best. I was tired afterward!
What can I say? This shot has been done a zillion times, but this exposure is mine!
Dead Horse Point at first light. I prefer this exposure when the first light just glanced the canyon rather than later when the canyon was more completely lit.
We’d see something, Mark would stop the car, the three of us (plus Mark) would climb out, get out the tripods and lenses, and shoot!
Birds are hard. We practiced a lot on ravens, but this hawk was my favorite.
Slot canyons are hard. These are the best I got. Gotta go back!
You just have to try, review your composition, (and exposure, but composition come first), and try again.
I’m going to have to review all my slot canyon shots again and learn from them.
A lot of shots require special processing which I don’t do on my laptop. I’ll properly redo them at home – and setup my laptop so I can do them on the road next trip. THERE WILL BE MANY MORE TRIPS! Travel is addictive!
I love trees and grasses and branches and clumps of flowers.
Needs work but I like it.
Back to my old style – with a slight bit of dynamic added.
Sometimes the back roads got a bit hairy!
My last picture on the road out of Moab. With Mark, you don’t stop shooting …
