Blogger’s Note

Continuing my new series of short videos. I think these two videos – and especially the second video – are beginning to show that I’m on the right path. Please comment!

Snow Geese lift off

Just after sunrise we can make out the white row of snow geese behind the reeds on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay. The flock overnights on the water – the safest place for them to sleep.

Snow geese rise from the Bay

We watched for hours

Probably not the same flock we saw lift off from the Bay …

  4. In the past 50 years there has been a decline of 2.9 BILLION! birds in N America.
From the amazing video I would never have guessed it. What a sight you captured.

    1. Bill – Snow geese are the exception – their numbers have exploded over the last few years. So much so that overpopulation may cause a collapse soon. Thanks for you comment! – barry

  10. Spectacular videos of the geese. You must have been frozen to the bone! I’ve never seen snow geese before so it was really cool to see so many in giant flocks. A few times I felt like they were flying in all directions…makes me wonder if they ever crash into one another, but I don’t think they do. Thanks for sharing your amazing trips.

    1. Hi Hope! Thanks! It wasn’t really very cold – 24 Degrees when I did the Blue Heron on Ice gradually warming up the rest of the day. I think the geese do occasionally run into each other. Our guide notice 2 or 3 geese on the ground, apparently stunned, perhaps from a collusion. The whole experience was great fun. Barry

  11. Barry,
Thank you so much for sharing. I just love hearing the sounds of the birds. Sure does make the experience so real. Your voice is smooth and warm. you have a real announcer’s voice. My parents enjoyed birding at Bombay Hook. Really liked this blog entry. Thank you

  14. As you may remember, I grew up in Newark Delaware, and spent many an hour at Bombay Hook watching birds, and always visit there if I end up back on the East Coast. Doesn’t look like the snow geese have changed very much, I am happy to say.

    1. Hi Guy! It was a great place to visit. The blue heron on thin ice’s filmed there too. Now the biggest change is that snow geese are one of the few bird species to increase in population. There are millions more there now than there were 10 years ago! Great place to visit and on my list to revisit.

      Cheers, – barry

    1. Dave – THANKS. I’m having fun. I suppose my main goal in life now in to impress the grandkids. They are all teenagers now. Hard to impress. But I’m pretty successful at it. And if Megan worries about me a little – that’s another success!
