Driving to Haines

Haines, Alaska                                                                         Sept. 10, 2016

Beautiful drive, cute town

Haines isn’t like Chitina.  Because it sits on the inland passage waterway, the temperatures are much warmer and many more people winter over in Haines.  Plus the drive to Haines is another incredibly beautiful drive.

There is no easy route to Haines.  From my starting point in Seward, Alaska to Haines is almost 900 miles!  It might be 500 miles as a bird flies – but my car doesn’t fly.  So I took the long way northeast to Tok, then southeast through the Yukon Territory and British Columbia.  I’ve always loved Route 1 along the coast of California.  Then I added the “Going to the Sun” route through Glacier to my elite list.  Then I added the “Top of the World” route from Dawson City to Tok through the Yukon to the list.  Now I’m adding the no-name route from Haines Junction to Haines to the list.

The Town of Haines, Alaska

Just a few pictures of the town – a far cry from Chitina.  Haines even has a yarn shop and a Thai restaurant!

Of course I spent very little time in town. Instead, I drove 5 – 10 miles outside of town and spent 4 delightful days photographing bears and eagles!
